Since a couple of months I have the pleasure of working at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag on the life and art of Piet Mondrian and his fellow colleagues of De Stijl. Next year, The Netherlands will celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the groundbreaking art movement De Stijl. This jubilee year has been dubbed: Mondrian to Dutch Design.
Last month a wonderful celebratory wall was revealed in the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre in Utrecht, to announce the year and highlight some of its key activities. Some wonderful Mondrian paintings are featured on the wall, which allow for a quick overview of his journey into abstraction. Also some Rietveld icons, two splendid Van Doesburg designs, a marvellous Van der Leck and contemporary interpretations of Dutch Design are featured on the wall. All in all a lovely introduction to next year’s festivities and the many art historical events to come. It will be one heck of a year for art lovers and discoverers!
If you happen to walk through Hoog Catharijne into the city centre, make sure not to miss it!
