I curate, research, teach and write. Currently for the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam and at the Faculty of Religion, Culture and Society of the University of Groningen. I also serve on the editorial boards of the Netherlands Yearbook for History of Art/ Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek (NKJ) (since 2023) and of the Dutch Review of Books (since 2025).
I am available for writing assignments, curatorial projects and speaking jobs (in Dutch and English) for the wider audience, as well as more specialist audiences, about a variety of topics including but not limited to: Christianity and the arts, Mary Magdalene, the topical relevance of the visual arts and museums, modernism in the visual arts, Lou Loeber, Mondrian & De Stijl, and the challenges faced by current heritage and collection practices in relation to climate change. If you’d like to invite me for an assignment or discuss a potential topic, do not hesitate to get in touch via lieke.wijnia@gmail.com.
As an art historian and religious studies scholar, I am a firm believer in the societal importance of art, music and museums. With both my research and curatorial work, I hope to create room for imagination, beauty, (spiritual) reflection, and impact. Through the selection and combination of objects, compositions and/or stories, I aim for experiences that embrace the unexpected and unfamiliar, resulting in a meaningful broadening of horizons.
